Ljupcho's family warned before he disappeared, and there is a document to prove it

Ten days after Ljupcho from Skopje was last seen, the search is being run by the same people who asked for help beforehand. His nephew Darko described publicly what they were told: hospital treatment requires a referral from a GP. They got one. They handed it in. Then they were told there was nowhere to place him, because the hospital is being renovated. During one of the last interventions they were informed there were no legal grounds to act if the person is calm at that moment. The condition of a man who has stopped taking his medication does not change according to who rings the doorbell - but the procedure gets written according to that five-minute impression.

Bitola's fire service worked 33 hours, then wrote that every fire was deliberately set

Thirty-three hours of unbroken work, from Makovo through Graeshnica and Kukurechani to Ivanjevci, Novoselani and Loznani. In its official statement, the Bitola fire service stated that every single location involved arson. That is not a reporter's guess; it is a field assessment from the people who put the fires out. The institutional response so far is a thank-you note to the firefighters and an appeal to citizens not to light fires outdoors. An appeal makes sense against carelessness. Arson is not carelessness, and the measure against it is a criminal complaint and an identified perpetrator - which has not been announced. In Makovo part of the terrain is still smouldering and cannot be approached, because unexploded First World War ordnance lies underneath it.

Six fires this morning, and the brackets in the official tally say oak forest

The Crisis Management Centre logged 29 fires in a single 24-hour period, six of them still burning, with 22 extinguished overnight. The list reads almost like a map of the country: Studenichani, Makedonski Brod, Veles, Jegunovce, Krushevo, Kriva Palanka. All of it is officially filed as "open-space fire", but the brackets record what actually burned - quality oak forest near Veles and Zelenikovo, two oak forests near Krushevo, pine in Kriva Palanka. Low scrub grows back in a season. Oak forest does not return with the next tally.

In Zelenikovo the mayor drove the fire truck himself

That same night, at two in the morning the mayor of Zelenikovo got behind the wheel of the fire truck to save the village. That image explains all the statistics above: capacity on the ground is being closed by people taking on someone else's job, because the system meant to do it arrives later than the fire does.

Two state laboratories tested the same water and contradicted each other

Demir Kapija is off tap water until Monday - but not because anyone knows the water is contaminated. Monday's sample, analysed by the Institute of Public Health in Skopje, showed the water failed the standards. Tuesday's sample, from the same measuring point, analysed by the Public Health Centre in Veles, showed it passed. The ban is the right call: when you don't know, you prohibit and you wait. The problem is that the director of the utility "Boshava" honestly named both possible causes: either the water system, or the way samples are taken, transported and processed. If it's the second, this is not a question about one town - the same type of periodic analysis, the same crews and the same protocol confirm every month that the water is fine somewhere else.

Four domestic violence arrests in nine hours in Polog

The police bulletin for a single night in Polog reads like a list: 14:15, 15:15, 17:00, 23:00. In one case the husband, according to the report, prevented his wife from seeking medical help - meaning the injury existed whether or not a document did. Not one of these cases was uncovered by accident; in every one, somebody from inside the home picked up the phone: the wife, the daughter, the nephew, the son. Every statement ends with the same formula, that an appropriate submission will follow once the case is documented. We know the hour of the arrest to the minute. What happened afterwards, we don't.

A cigarette butt gets you arrested; a spark from a cable gets filed as bad weather

The fire near Ramni Gaber was, according to initial information, caused by a spark from a cable. Maintaining overhead power lines is a legal obligation that is billed to citizens, and the records from the last inspections are a verifiable fact, not an opinion. The difference in treatment is what's visible: a discarded cigarette butt brings an arrest, an infrastructure spark brings a phrase that hands the cause over to the weather.

An hour at the border, while inside the country they warn about landslides

Of all the border crossings in the country, exactly one produces an hour-long queue - the exit towards Greece via Bogorodica, while Tabanovce runs at 30 minutes. The same day, the automobile association warned of landslide risk on four named routes, on a day with dry roads. Both notices come from the same institutional logic: the situation is published neatly, and the work that produced the situation stays somebody else's.

Wheat bought at 9.5 denars, and the document it's calculated from doesn't exist

The same grain fetched 19 denars five or six years ago. Farmers are asking for 5 denars per kilo from the Intervention Fund, and the law obliges the state to top up the difference to the production price. Except nobody has calculated the production price, so the obligation exists without a number attached to it. Meanwhile, Europe is short 10 million workers and there isn't a single programmer at the top of that list - technicians, metal workers, machine operators and drivers are the five most sought-after groups, and Macedonia is among the countries with the lowest employment rate.

Asphalt after 30 years, except the archive remembers 2017 and 2022

The work on Boris Trajkovski Boulevard is real - the sewerage is new, the corridor carries over 100,000 people a day. The figure of "30 years of waiting" is a political assessment, not data, because the City of Skopje's own archive remembers works in 2017 and 2022. The same relationship with one's own records shows up in Vizbegovo and Arachinovo, where the mayor admits the fires appear almost every year: for Arachinovo there is a written response and a deadline, for Vizbegovo there isn't even a statement.

The lighter part of the day

Outside all of this, a man who lost his sight rides at over 30 kilometres an hour on a 26-year-old tandem, on the first inclusive tour in Prespa - bikes like that aren't sold in Macedonia, and the parts are hunted down the way you'd source them for a museum car. On Pelister, rangers and police walked three hours in the dark to catch armed men at 2,000 metres, along a road that has existed since the First World War and that no employee can remember ever being maintained. In sport, Macedonia is bidding for EHF EURO 2034 together with Serbia and Slovenia, and Ohrid defended its title by a single goal.

The day did not lack documents. There is a referral, a statement that the fires were set deliberately, two laboratory analyses, a bulletin with exact times, and maintenance records. What is missing, in every one of those cases, is the second half of the job - the part where somebody signs their name under what happens next.
