The Shevitsa ensemble holds the Sofia premiere of "Zmeyova Svatba" ("The Dragon's Wedding") on April 17, 2027 in Hall 1 of the National Palace of Culture. The spectacle starts at 7 p.m. and is billed as a music, dance and song fairy tale in three scenes.
The plot comes from Petko Yu. Todorov's 1910 play, a story of impossible love and the longing for freedom at the price of escaping into folk illusion. The prototypes of the Dragon and Tsena are the poet Peyo Yavorov and Mina Todorova, the playwright's sister, whose short and tragic relationship is still talked about in Bulgaria today.
Shevitsa was founded in 2014 by choreographer Petar Angelov and today has more than 90 members, from children to adults, with its own choir and a children's and youth dance group. It has been a member of CIOFF since 2016. The Sofia performance also features actor Stefan Milkov, with music by Petyo Krastev.
Tickets on bilet.bg cost 12 to 42 euros, roughly 740 to 2,590 denars. Folk costumes, ritual songs and a dramatic thread on Sofia's biggest stage are a different route to folklore than a classic ensemble concert.
