A plot in Karpoš that served as an illegal dump for years is supposed to become an 86,000-square-metre park. Skopje Mayor Orce Gjorgjievski, together with Karpoš Mayor Sotir Lukrovski, visited the site and announced greenery, children's corners, multi-purpose playgrounds, urban furniture and the park's own hydrant network.

According to the City, the dump has been cleared, the layer of ground where waste had piled up for years has been removed, and clean soil is now being brought in. "For years this very place was a huge illegal dump, a picture that reminded you of Vardarište," Gjorgjievski said. He claims waste piled up here, cables were burned and smoke spread, and he blamed the former city authorities for all of it: "Citizens suffered the consequences of such neglect for far too long. We are putting an end to it!"

A promise with no deadline and no price tag

The announcement contains neither a date by which the park will be finished nor how much it will cost. There is only "soon". And "soon" without a date isn't a deadline - it's a hope.

Waste runs through the other agreed priorities too. The City and the Municipality agreed to look into a transfer station for municipal waste, replacing existing containers and installing new ones, and new vehicles for collecting and hauling waste in Karpoš. The list also includes rebuilding the access road to Bardovci and a new water reservoir, Skupi Street, modular car parks in Karpoš 4, repairing the landslide near the church in Ždanec, new streets and bridges in Momin Potok and Krivi Dol, bridges over the Serava, and zone parking.

The mayor also noted that construction is wrapping up on the bridge on Ljubljanska Street, a project that had been stalled for years.

A cleared dump is good news for anyone living nearby. But the real test isn't the day the first tree goes in - it's the day someone shows up at night with a truckload of rubble again. Who is going to guard the new park so it doesn't slide back to the old ways?
