Aleksandar Dunić has played the role of Duke Janko Katić close to 800 times. On August 24 he plays it again, at Princess Ljubica's Residence in Belgrade, from 20:30, as part of the 33rd BELEF. The ticket costs 500 dinars.
The monodrama „Wise and Heroic Duke Janko Katić” is a text by Milovan Vitezović, a writer who spent his entire career writing about Serbian history in dramatic form. Katić is one of the larger but lesser-known figures of the First Serbian Uprising. He was educated for his time, spoke Turkish and German, and served as Karađorđe's official interpreter. He was killed immediately before the Battle of Mišar in 1806, which means he did not live to see the greatest success of the uprising he took part in.
The form is the most modest one theatre has: one man, one text, an authentic costume of the Serbian dukes made by costume designer Boris Čakširanin. There is no set design to save the performer if the text does not hold, and no other actors to lean on. Eight hundred performances is data enough on whether it holds or not.
BELEF ran this year from July 20 to 26, with free concerts at the Youth Centre and monodramas at the Residence. The August date for Janko Katić is a repeat for the audience that missed the July one. Tickets are via tickets.rs and at Ticket Vision points of sale.
