Istanbul band Lalalar plays Zagreb's Močvara club on December 20 at 8 p.m. The night is billed as "Istanbul psychedelia", and that's an accurate description.
Lalalar was founded in 2018 and fuses Anatolian psychedelia with electronics, funk, dark wave and club rhythms. The band wants to make a contemporary version of Turkish psychedelia, with no nostalgia for the past. Critics describe the sound as a mix of spaghetti western psychedelia, Anatolian funk, sampling and hazy electronics, with something of the themes of cult eighties TV series.
The 2022 debut album "Bi Cinnete Bakar" got strong reviews, and the follow-up, 2023's "En Kötü İyi Olur", is more club-oriented and more uncompromising but stays true to its Anatolian roots. In the Balkans we usually know Turkish music through TV series and pop hits. Lalalar is a good chance to hear the other, sharper side.
Early tickets cost 22 euros (about 1,355 denars) plus fees and are sold via entrio.hr. Močvara is on Trnjanski nasip in Zagreb, Croatia.
