LeBron James Won't Decide Until August - at 41, He's Taking His First Real Break

LeBron James has no intention of rushing. At 41, after a record-breaking 23rd NBA season, for the first time in his career he's taking time off before deciding what comes next - and what comes next could be something that until recently wasn't on the cards: retirement.

On the latest episode of the Mind the Game podcast with co-host Steve Nash, James said he hadn't thought much about the summer and the decision could be pushed back into August. "I'm still taking my time and haven't thought about it much. Obviously I understand that I'm a free agent and I can control my own destiny - whether that means staying with this franchise or going somewhere else. But I haven't gotten to that point."

The numbers are not at all bad for a 41-year-old: 20.9 points, 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds per game over 60 games, with the Lakers reaching the second round of the playoffs. With a 52.6-million-dollar contract expiring, he remains the biggest name in the free-agent market in 2026.

What's read between the lines is the interesting part. When James says "winning is the most important thing," and then immediately adds "I'm not going anywhere with a full reset in year 24," that's a conversation about two or three teams, not ten. The Lakers are the default. The other candidates: teams that are close to a title, with cap space and the patience to carry the old man through the regular season so he can flip the outcome for them in the playoffs.

It could also be "the end, thanks, this was enough." At 41, with all the records and a family waiting for a holiday after Memorial Day, no one could criticise him. But if history teaches anything - LeBron rarely chooses the quiet exit.
