MakeDox returns to Skopje from August 20 to 27 with its seventeenth edition and 71 documentary films on the programme. This year's motto is "Only the dream is reality", taken from a poem by Tin Ujević and from a book by film critic Ilindenka Petruševa, to whom the festival is dedicated. Tickets range from 100 to 2,000 denars.
The two Macedonian premieres fall on consecutive days and both were shot in Kočani. "Good People" by Milcho Manchevski screens on August 23 in the main programme and was made with survivors of the fire at the Puls club. "Ruins" by Elena Chemerska is on August 24 in the new authors programme and follows the restoration of the Monument of Freedom in the same town.
The programme is split into six sections: main programme, new authors, Country in Focus with Spain, short documentaries, student programme and a programme for children and young people. The awards carry names the festival has not changed in years and nobody else uses: Onion, Young Onion, Chopped Onion, Rooster and the Ethics Award. Fifteen international professionals are expected on the jury, with more than 100 foreign guests in total.
The festival runs across five venues in Skopje: Kurshumli An, the Museum of Macedonia, Suli An, Laboratorium and the Albanian Theatre. Screening inside the ans is not an aesthetic choice but a way for the festival to hold its audience in the old part of the city rather than in a cinema hall. Tickets are available through karti.com.mk.
