Nightmares on Wax plays Sofia on August 30, 2026 at the club Malkata Tekila. Behind the alias is George Herbert Evelyn, born January 15, 1970, a DJ and producer from Leeds who also works as DJ E.A.S.E.

Evelyn is one of the original architects of the downtempo and trip-hop approach that defined the early nineties. His sound fuses jazz, hip-hop, reggae and the early rave heard across England at the end of the eighties. The debut album "A Word of Science: The First and Final Chapter" came out in 1991 on Warp Records, the label that would later become shorthand for British electronica.

The second album is why this name still means something. "Smokers Delight" from 1995 sits at number fifteen on Fact's list of the fifty best trip-hop albums of all time. It is a record you listen to more as an atmosphere than as a set of songs, and it defined an entire line of slow electronica that followed.

The project started as a group, first with John Halnon, then with Kevin Harper, but over the years narrowed to Evelyn as its sole bearer. He now lives on Ibiza, which you can partly hear in the warmer, sunnier tone of his more recent releases compared with the grey sound of early Leeds.
