Barcelona Flamenco Ballet performs its new production "Romeo and Juliet" at mts dvorana in Belgrade on November 8 from 8 p.m. The Spanish company describes it as its most ambitious project yet.

The company was founded by David Gutiérrez in 2017, and its first show, "Tiempo Nuevo", premiered on June 9 that year at the Barts theatre in Barcelona. Since then it has been adapting classic works to the flamenco tradition. Its last big production before this one was "Carmen", based on Georges Bizet's opera.

Shakespeare's tragedy is told here through the passion of flamenco, the subtlety of contemporary dance and the richness of jazz. The feud between the Montagues and the Capulets stops being just a literal clash and becomes a metaphor for a person's inner and outer conflicts. The musicians on stage, with a varied line-up of instruments, play a score that goes from nostalgic melodies to improvisation, so every performance gets something of its own. A story about two families who have hated each other for generations - Balkan audiences won't need it explained.
