Skopje Airport Leads the Region: 33% Passenger Growth, But Are They Leaving or Arriving?

Skopje Airport recorded a 32% increase in passenger traffic compared to the same period last year, announced Vice-Premier and Transport Minister Aleksandar Nikoloski. Together with Ohrid Airport, 841,577 passengers were served in Q1 2026 - a 33.2% year-over-year growth.

Nikoloski declared Macedonian airports "leaders in the region," noting that Skopje Airport ranks among the top three in the former Yugoslav territory by passenger numbers. The record growth comes despite global crises and reduced flight capacity due to Middle East geopolitical tensions.

The numbers speak for themselves - 33% growth is impressive for airports of this size. But is the record passenger count due to new airlines and improved connectivity, or simply because more Macedonians are leaving?
