Residents of Struga are demanding that the government declare a state of emergency in the municipality due to the prolonged drinking water contamination crisis. The ban on consuming tap water has been in effect for some time, and analysis results indicate a serious breach of quality standards.

Water samples taken on February 9, 2026 showed turbidity of 28.56, with the permitted limit being 1.5 - that is almost 19 times above the allowed level. The situation has escalated from a local problem to a matter of national public health concern.

The Prosecutor's Office has confirmed the existing suspicions and initiated the necessary investigative measures. Suspicious excavation activity by two companies from Veles near the Sum spring was discovered - a zone prohibited for operations. Work machinery was found in the restricted zone, and the investigation focuses on possible illegal mineral extraction that contaminated the strategic water supply point.

Citizens are demanding a quick and lasting solution, as well as institutional accountability for those who issued permits or failed to take preventive action. The case has raised questions about the protection of strategic water resources in the country.
