The electronic music festival Sunwaves holds its spring edition, SW39, at Golden Sands near Varna from April 29 to May 5, 2027. The stage sits on PR Beach, and for the organisers 2027 is an anniversary year: 20 years since the very first edition.

Sunwaves started in 2007 with a single stage in Mamaia Nord, near Constanța on Romania's Black Sea coast. It ran twice a year, in spring and at the end of summer, and by the mid-2010s it had become a pilgrimage site for minimal house fans. Ricardo Villalobos, Chris Stussy, Margaret Dygas, Seth Troxler and Sonja Moonear all played there.

The Romanian edition ended after 2025. The organisers cited a lack of respect from the authorities and local police towards the event. In 2026 the festival held its first spring edition at Golden Sands, while running parallel editions in Zanzibar, Ras Al Khaimah and southern Spain. How many festivals pack up and cross a border because of the police - and how many cities would be glad to take them in?

First-wave tickets on bilet.bg range from 89 to 189 euros, roughly 5,480 to 11,640 denars. The line-up has not been announced yet.
