The Gathering, the Dutch atmospheric metal and alternative rock band from Oss, plays Sofia on 22 September 2026. The concert was originally booked for the Ancient Theatre in Plovdiv, but it has been moved to the Joy Station club in Sofia, with the start time pushed to 7pm. The band is one of the defining figures of nineties gothic and dark wave, and one of the most recognisable names on the Dutch metal scene.

Active since 1989, the band became a serious influence on the genre with the 1995 album Mandylion, one of the first gothic metal records where a female vocal carried the whole thing. Long-time frontwoman Anneke van Giersbergen left in 2007 after 13 years and was replaced by Silje Wergeland. With 13 studio albums behind them, they shaped groups like Within Temptation and Nightwish.

The setlist pulls from Mandylion, Nighttime Birds and How to Measure a Planet?, alongside newer material. The sound today sits somewhere between atmospheric rock and post-metal, with heavy trip-hop and ambient influence. Joy Station holds 1,500 people and has already hosted Paradise Lost, Leprous, Tarja Turunen and Therion - which makes it a logical address for a show like this.

Tickets are 52.50 euros via eventim.bg. The concert starts at 7pm on Tuesday, 22 September 2026, in Sofia. For Macedonian fans of gothic metal and atmospheric music, this is one of the few chances worth crossing a border for.
