Victoria Beckham reveals her first dates with David were in car parks: the most famous couple of the nineties started where nobody was looking

On Today with Jenna & Sheinelle on the American network NBC, Victoria Beckham revealed a detail that doesn't fit the image of a couple who have lived under the spotlight for decades. Their first few dates with David were in car parks. Hours of talking in a car, far from the photographers, before the world found out they were together.

They met in 1997, in the Manchester United players' lounge. She was at the height of her fame with the Spice Girls, he was playing for the club. Two young people recognised at every step - and the only place they could be alone was a car park. Fame has a price, and sometimes that price is a romance between concrete pillars.

Almost three decades later, Victoria joked at her husband's expense, saying she would make sure David doesn't skip squats at the gym. The joke is light, but it comes in a heavy year.

2026 is the worst year yet for the Beckham family's reputation. The eldest son, Brooklyn, publicly broke with his parents in January, and the rift has been dragging on since his wedding to Nicola Peltz in 2022. Victoria and David say they don't want a media war with their own son, and the other three children - Romeo, Cruz and Harper Seven - have taken their side.

That's why the car park story works so well. It takes them back to the beginning, when there was no brand, no sponsorship deals and no fashion house, just two people hiding from the world in a parked car. Is it nostalgia, or a cleverly chosen moment to remind the public of better days? Most likely both.
