The "Where Are You" App Comes to Macedonia: a Silent Call for Victims of Violence and a Precise Location for Emergency Services

Sometimes technology really can save a life - if it's done right. The director of the Crisis Management Center announced that citizens in Macedonia will soon be able to use a new app, "Where Are You," connected to the 112 system, which enables faster and more precise communication with emergency services.

The idea is simple and useful: instead of explaining your location over a phone call - which isn't easy in a panic - the app sends your exact location directly, along with photos and video clips. The responding services get a clearer picture of the situation on the ground, and in emergencies direct video communication with the Operations Center will also be possible.

The most important feature, though, is the one you notice least. "Silent Call" is meant for victims of domestic violence and people in danger - it lets them quietly and safely ask for help without having to speak to an operator. For someone locked in a room with an abuser, being able to call for help without saying a word isn't a tech add-on - it's the difference between help arriving and help not arriving.

The Center says this continues the modernization of the 112 system. The idea is excellent - but it's worth remembering that the app is worth exactly as much as the system behind it. If the location arrives in a second but the team sets out half an hour later, the technology just documents the wait more neatly. Will 112 really be ready to respond quickly to everything the app sends it? We'll only find out when the first real call comes in - and we hope it'll be ready.
