Wolves Escaped Skopje's Zoo and Killed Kangaroos - and the Zoo Stays Silent

White wolves dug a hole beneath their enclosure and escaped from the Zoo in Skopje, after which they attacked and killed four kangaroos and several emu birds. It took staff several hours to catch them and return them. And instead of an explanation, from the zoo - silence.

The animal protection association „Anima Mundi" reacted sharply, demanding the immediate closure of Skopje Zoo and an independent inspection of all enclosures, fences, cages and security systems. Activists also call for an independent investigation into the escape, into the killing of the animals and into establishing accountability for the failures, as well as a moratorium on breeding and bringing in new animals until standards are met.

The hardest part is the silence itself. The acting director of Skopje Zoo did not answer calls to clarify the circumstances. When an institution that children enter every day stays quiet about an incident in which beasts ended up outside their cages, the question is no longer only about the kangaroos.

Because the next question is unavoidable: if the fence didn't hold against wolves, what guarantees that tomorrow it won't fail against something more dangerous, with visitors nearby? „Anima Mundi" is asking exactly that - who can guarantee safety at Skopje Zoo? Silence is not an answer. Silence is an admission that there is none.
