Cannes 2026 - Three Spanish Films in Competition, and 87-Year-Old Jane Fonda Tearing Down the Red Carpet

The 2026 Cannes Film Festival opened with a red carpet that, as usual, paid off for everyone who had thought about flying to France. This time - three Spanish films in main competition: „Amarga Navidad" by Pedro Almodóvar, „El ser querido" by Rodrigo Sorogoyen, and „La bola negra" by the Los Javis collective. Cannes once again positions Spain as the centre of gravity of southern European cinema.

On the carpet, Demi Moore - this year on the jury - stepped out in a Jacquemus creation with Chopard jewellery. The choice is not accidental. Jacquemus is a brand that has spent years trying to bring minimalism back into luxury. With Moore on the carpet, they get a certificate no marketing budget can buy.

Black dominated. Kelly Rutherford in Giorgio Armani. Poppy Delevingne in a velvet gown by John Galliano for Dior, with sheer details. Jane Fonda, at 87, in a black sequined Gucci with an amethyst-and-diamond pendant. When Fonda stands next to a camera, it's hard for any 30-year-old woman to get more attention - and that's exactly the point.

Yellow was chosen by Heidi Klum - in an Elie Saab gown with a large floral detail that will carry every tweet of the morning. Carlos Sainz Jr, the Spanish Formula 1 driver, showed up with model Rebecca Donaldson. Both in Giorgio Armani, coordinated without being too obvious - the script is that Armani still knows how to dress a whole couple so that they look like a natural pair.

For Balkan readers, Cannes is always the benchmark that shows us what weddings in the region will be wearing in a few years' time. Did you see the black-and-silver combo? That will be in Skopje, Belgrade and Podgorica from September onwards. Did you see the yellow with the large flower? That will be in wedding-dress shops by 2027. Cannes isn't just fashion - it's the academy for what becomes fashion two years later.

Above all, Cannes 2026 is a confirmation that women over 60 - Fonda, Moore, Rutherford - can still dominate a red carpet more than the 25-year-old models. That's not a styling story. It's a cultural one.
