Fire does not fall from the sky

Stojanche Angelov, head of the Directorate for Protection and Rescue, said the thing officials rarely say out loud: a large share of the fires are set deliberately, to erase the traces of illegal logging. The Crisis Management Centre logged 23 open-air fires by 6pm alone, eight of them still burning, and Skopje has spent several nights breathing smoke drifting in from the fire line toward Kosovo. The flames, Angelov says, appear exactly where the forest was cut beforehand. Which means firefighters are putting out a consequence, while the cause sits on the logging site for months before it ignites.

One arrest, twenty active fires

Near Struga, an 85-year-old man from Zagrachani was arrested for setting a fire at the spot known as "Lok". No house burned, nobody died, but that is pure luck rather than anyone's work. The ratio tells you everything: one man detained against roughly twenty active fires. When burning open land goes unpunished for decades, the message reaching the next arsonist is simple - it is free.

Six decades from idea to excavator

In Skopje, the excavators have moved into Keramidnica and demolition has begun on the houses standing along the route of a boulevard that has existed on the city's planning maps since 1965. The "General Mihajlo Apostolski" bridge stood built and closed, and the previous mayor joked it would be good for fishing. Now the road is finally being cut through - but only halfway. The branch behind the "East Gate" mall is stuck in court proceedings. Every new mayor inherits the unfinished work of the last one and leaves the next one unfinished. Only the houses are already gone.

Work that is written down nowhere

In 2025, 94,847 people worked informally in Macedonia, an increase of 11.5 percent. Union calculations put the loss to the state at up to 448 million euros a year. At the same time, roughly 73 percent of formally employed people earn below the average wage, and almost every second worker takes home up to 600 euros. When the official salary looks like that, the gap between declared and undeclared stops being a moral dilemma and becomes the arithmetic of survival. The causes listed are low tax morale, distrust and corruption - and not one of them is solved by an inspection.

Numbers that depend on who is reading them

GDP jumped 4.3 percent while construction grew 21.9 percent - growth that raises the question of how much of it is state spending rather than private activity. In parallel, the dispute over the 350 million in road debt between government and opposition is not about whether the debt exists, but about where it gets recorded. That is an argument about bookkeeping, not about money - and the bill is identical whichever column it sits in.

Nature defending itself

On Shar Mountain, the last pipe has come out of Leshnica and the hydro plants inside the strictly protected zone have been stopped. That is the rare story in which an institution acted before it was too late. Meanwhile, seven people have died of West Nile fever in a matter of months, against ten in the previous fifteen years - a figure that demands an answer about what has changed in mosquito control.

Police, drugs and driving licences

In Galichnik, five people ended up at a police station after marijuana, hallucinogenic mushrooms and pills were pulled from tents at the site known as "Stopanche". The quantities are missing from the statement - and quantities are exactly what separates personal use from organised dealing. The same day, 16 drivers were detained in a single 24-hour period, 14 of whom had never passed a driving test at all. The oldest is 68, which means he drove for decades without anyone stopping him.

Gevgelija, Shtip and the grapes in Kavadarci

The Old Bazaar in Gevgelija has finally opened after 27 permits for 27 buildings, and in Shtip pastrmajlija stays at 250 denars despite rising costs. The vineyard growers are having a worse time: grapes are rotting on the vine in Kavadarci while the purchase price is still being negotiated, and the message from the field is short - buy the harvest first, sing afterwards.

Silence over Kyiv that lasts exactly three days

The forest was cut before it burned, the worker went undeclared before the pension came up short, the boulevard waited six decades on paper. The fire, like everything else today, is simply the moment all of that becomes visible.
