Empty classrooms, the Puls trial, arson on Pelister, tenders at the anti-corruption commission

Of 65 children from one village, 45 are already abroad

The number that tells the whole story comes from Dolno Palchishte: of 65 children born in 2020, 45 are abroad, and instead of three first-grade classes there are eighteen enrolled pupils. The same day the bell did not ring in four villages around Struga, and in Bitola two branch schools are running with one pupil each - one child, one classroom, one teacher. Closing a school is not a cause, it is a consequence arriving twenty years late. Their parents decided to leave long ago, and nobody has changed their minds since.

The same day, the minister told first-graders to ask for a little brother

While municipalities count empty desks, the minister told first-graders to ask for a little brother, in a year that has seen 26 schools closed. That is not demographic policy, it is a greeting card. Levica meanwhile proposes writing off twenty percent of a housing loan per child - households owe nearly two billion euros on that basis alone. Municipalities respond as best they can: Prilep is paying 3,000 denars per first-grader for the first time, while across Macedonia the support ranges from 2,000 to 8,000 denars. A fourfold difference between one municipality and the next means there is no policy - there are forty-eight separate decisions.

"Could have and had to" - the sentence that reduces the Kochani tragedy

Eighteen months after that night in Kochani, the expert witness told the court that the inspector could have and had to act to have the venue closed. The first inspection records were drawn up in March 2025 - after the building had already burned. The hall that hosted concerts was officially registered as a light-industry facility. There was a law, there was an inspector, there was an obligation. Whether the court names that an oversight or a decision is the difference between an accident and accountability, and the families waiting are owed that answer.

Thirteen hours between the report and the bodies

At 00:49 a daughter reported to Skopje police that she could not reach her mother and her mother's husband. Thirteen hours later that same woman found them both dead in the flat. An autopsy will establish how the two Taiwanese nationals died. What it will not answer is what kind of checks take thirteen hours when two people vanish simultaneously from the same flat. Early reports listed them as Thai nationals - the correction came after the story had already travelled.

With children the law is precise, and nobody answers

In Chair police say a thirteen-year-old stabbed three people but will face no criminal proceedings - under 14 there is no prosecution, the Centre for Social Work takes over. The law here really is clear. The open question is whether the Centre has the people for what the law hands it, because handing something over without capacity is the same as handing it nowhere.

72 hours of firefighting for a blaze that was most likely set deliberately

Almost the entire firefighting capacity of the state was turned toward Pelister for three days: territorial units from Bitola and Resen, the Protection and Rescue Directorate, army helicopters, air tractors, volunteers. The park says the fire was most likely set deliberately. The same day the bill was growing elsewhere: over 41 fires in a single day and a fire line longer than five kilometres crossing in from Kosovo, while near Selce three timber thieves were caught. While some put out the fire, others load up.

From 50 thousand to 1.5 million, and the case stays open

SDSM is demanding minister Andonovski's resignation over 1.5 million euros in tenders awarded to a firm whose manager was a business partner of the state secretary's husband. The story started at 50 thousand euros and an open case at the anti-corruption commission. That is the mechanism worth repeating: an open case stops no tender, no contract, no payment. The accusation comes from the opposition in a pre-election period, but it is built from verifiable things - company names, managers, ownership stakes. None of them requires trusting SDSM in order to be checked.

The state changes the procurement rules, but not who grades them

On the same day the government adopted amendments to the Public Procurement Law so the cheapest bid no longer wins automatically. On paper that fixes a known problem. In practice the question simply moves: who assesses quality, and what happens when the assessment is disputed. Gas is much the same - Macedonia is getting a gas market operator, and it will be the same firm that runs the electricity market, under a decision that is a framework with no deadline, no figure and no date for the first trade.

The numbers that do not agree

Industry delivered a figure worth reading twice: output is up 1.3 percent while the workforce is down 2.6 percent. Clothing manufacturing lost 11.6 percent of its workers in a year. In the election year, meanwhile, 63 municipalities handed out 4 million euros in aid, a million more than the year before, and Skopje, Chair and Saraj will not say how much they distributed. On Vodno the cable car repair jumped from 20 to 45 million denars with no signed contractor, after an Austrian firm found a full service had never been carried out.

The train left, and that is real news

Not everything today was a record of what went undone. The city train got through its first day - in the morning with the prime minister in the first carriage, in the evening without power outside Lisiche, passengers standing half an hour on a track they could not even step down from. The project's other two lines are, for now, paperwork waiting on a budget. The train still left, which is more than can be said for most of the list above.

The lighter part of the day

In Ohrid Vardar took a fifth Super Cup in the final twenty seconds, on a Vorkapikj seven-metre throw and a Valah save that settled it. The basketball team has eight straight wins and still slipped one place on the FIBA list - the ranking clearly remembers more slowly than the team plays. And the final day of the transfer window showed football's real price: Messi left Argentina, and City paid 125 million pounds for Enzo.

What is left of the day

Every one of these events has its own record. The schools are counted, the inspection report is written, the anti-corruption case is open, the report came in at 00:49. The state did not fail at noticing today - it failed at what comes after noticing. And that is the difference paid for by the families in Kochani, by the daughter who found the bodies herself, and by the villages where September is counting empty classrooms again.
