Twelve Arrested at the Football Federation, Tax Office Heads IOTA, a Disability Protest and Starmer's Resignation

The federation till that emptied while the national team waited

The number of arrests in the embezzlement case at the Football Federation of Macedonia has climbed to twelve, with around three million euros allegedly missing from the institution that is supposed to run Macedonian football. Prosecutors say services were paid for that were never delivered - the classic mechanism for draining a till. In a country where the national team rarely reaches the big stage and young players hunt for a way abroad, the question is not only who will answer for it, but how many generations of players were shortchanged while the money went to the wrong address.

An honour in Budapest, a test at home

The same day brought a rare bit of good news for a Macedonian institution: the Public Revenue Office took over the one-year presidency of IOTA, the European organisation of tax administrations. The recognition is not merely symbolic - it is a table where practices are agreed that later become domestic tax policy. But a title and a reform are not the same thing. If the year at the helm turns into better collection and fewer tax loopholes at home, that is worth celebrating. If it stays a ceremony in Budapest, it will be one more title for the drawer.

When the law has to be defended in the street

And while some institutions collect honours, others force people to beg for what is already theirs. The „Menuvame“ coalition has announced a protest on Thursday outside the Ministry of Social Policy, demanding the restoration of personal-assistance working hours and timely payments - rights the law already guarantees. Behind every hour cut stands a real person who cannot get up or leave the house on their own. The same logic fits the news that over 160 healthcare workers will be trained to recognise corruption - the training is the easy part; the question is what happens after the first report.

The economy between the grant and the cost

On the economic front the day offered both carrot and stick. The employment agency opened a call for 10,000-euro grants for young entrepreneurs, but a grant is only the start - success is measured three years later, when you see how many businesses survived. On the other hand, from 1 July commercial vehicles must carry smart tachographs for the EU, which for small hauliers means a new cost. And who pays it? As usual, the customer.

The world: resignations, drones and one catastrophe

Beyond the borders, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer resigned after little more than a year in power, brought down by a string of electoral defeats and pressure from his own party. Over Moscow, meanwhile, 58 drones were shot down and airports were closed - the war that was meant to end in days is now reaching the heart of Russia. In the Caspian Sea, a pipeline ruptured and crude oil spilled onto the shore, with the polluter running the investigation into its own damage.

The hardest news comes from Qatar. A powerful explosion at a liquefied-gas plant left 54 injured, with 18 people still missing. Authorities are calling it a technical incident during start-up. The question that lingers is how it was ever allowed to happen in a country that supplies half the world with gas.

The lighter part of the day

To close, something that does not hurt. At the World Cup, the Netherlands poured five goals past Sweden and set the standard, while Spain is already feeling the pressure. In basketball, Zeljko Obradovic returns to the Panathinaikos bench, where he became a legend. And in handball, Vardar returns to the Champions League after four years, a competition now expanding to 24 teams.

If anything ties the heavier part of the day together, it is the gap between what institutions announce and what actually reaches the person. The till being emptied, the right defended in the street, the title waiting to become a reform - all say the same thing: announcing is easy, answering is hard.
