The Historycast podcast goes in front of a live audience at Akademija 28 in Belgrade on October 7 from 7:30 p.m. The topic is "Belgrade: from kasaba to metropolis", and it opens the first edition of the series "Nedeljom lajv".

The question is simple, the answer isn't: how did a border kasaba - an Ottoman market town - with narrow, crooked streets and oriental houses become a modern European capital with ordered squares, representative palaces and new city quarters? The conversation follows Belgrade's transformation through the 19th and early 20th century.

Talking with the audience are art historians Jovana Milovanović and Nikola Piperski. It won't only be about urbanism and architecture, but also about people, ideas and changes in everyday life, because the metropolis didn't come about only through new buildings, but through a new way of living. For a reader from Skopje the story sounds familiar - here too the kasaba and the European city have been competing for the same space for decades.

Tickets are 1,300 dinars via tickets.rs. Historycast also has a second Belgrade night on November 2 at mts dvorana, on the history of Serbs and Croats.
