Slovenian saxophonist Jure Pukl comes to the Blues and Beer club in Belgrade on 4 October from 8pm, and he brings two musicians from the very top of the New York jazz scene: double bassist Joe Sanders and drummer Gregory Hutchinson.

This band was not thrown together for a tour. The same three, plus saxophonist Melissa Aldana, recorded the album "Doubtless" for the British label Whirlwind Recordings in 2018. The whole session was cut live in a Slovenian studio in three hours, no overdubs, no fixes - a decision that either reveals a band's real form or exposes the lack of it. Reviewers wrote about a "deeply resonant bass" and "restrained but empathetic drums" as the frame in which Pukl's tenor gets room to move.

Hutchinson is a drummer whose CV runs straight through the hardest core of American jazz from the nineties onwards, and Sanders is a bassist whose tone is recognisable even when he is playing accompaniment. That a trio like this turns up in a club with a hundred chairs on Cetinjska rather than in a concert hall says more about Belgrade's scene than about their standing.

Pukl has also run joint masterclasses with Aldana, Sanders and Hutchinson at the Bimhuis in Amsterdam, which tells you something about how this circle of musicians operates: playing and teaching are the same job. In a club setting that usually means the audience watches a band listening to itself, rather than four people playing in parallel.
