"Monsters of metal" brings to Nova Zappa Barka in Belgrade a night in which two of the biggest catalogues in heavy metal history are played back to back. On October 17 from 9pm, Black Metallica and Peace of Maiden take the stage - tribute acts devoted to Metallica and Iron Maiden.
Peace of Maiden is the one with the heavier CV. They have concerts with a symphony orchestra in Belgrade, Zagreb and Ljubljana behind them, which for a tribute band means the production has outgrown the club format and moved into territory where mistakes have nowhere to hide. The band is known for carrying over not just the music but the visual side of Iron Maiden - the stage Bruce Dickinson runs across, and Eddie as the trademark.
Black Metallica covers the other half of the evening. Metallica and Iron Maiden are the two bands that decided in the eighties what metal would mean for the next forty years, but they got there by completely different routes: one through speed and aggression, the other through melody and a galloping bass. When the two catalogues are played one after the other in the same room, that difference comes across more clearly than it does on record.
Nova Zappa Barka near the Nebojša Tower carries the tradition of Belgrade rock clubs named after Frank Zappa, and a boat on the Sava means sound bouncing off water instead of concrete. For a metal bill that usually means a rougher, more natural sound than a hall lined with acoustic panels.
Tickets through tickets.rs start at 1,200 dinars, around 630 denars. For that money, two catalogues Macedonian audiences rarely hear live, except when one of the bigger festivals books a guest slot.
