American band Mother's Finest play Zagreb's Boogaloo club on November 23, starting at 9pm. This is the band that literally invented the crossing of hard rock and raw funk groove - a combination that sounds obvious half a century later only because they made it.
The group formed in 1970 and is fronted by married vocal duo Joyce Kennedy and Glenn Murdock. They are based in Atlanta today. Their 1976 debut album was recorded with white musicians - guitarist Moses Mo and drummer B.B. Borden - alongside Black vocalists Kennedy and Murdock, bassist Jerry Seay and keyboardist Mike Keck. Classic Rock magazine described the sound as Sly and the Family Stone meeting Led Zeppelin.
Through the seventies they became the most dangerous support act in rock, because they regularly outplayed the headliners they opened for - Aerosmith, Frank Marino and Ted Nugent among them. The album "Another Mother Further" produced two charting singles, "Baby Love" and "Piece of the Rock".
An interracial band in the American South in the seventies was not a stylistic choice, it was a statement - and Atlanta is not a neutral place for that statement. That is the part of the story routinely dropped when the band gets reduced to a genre label. Tickets through entrio.hr go up to 37 euros, roughly 2,279 denars.
