Roblox - the platform where children around the world make and play games - has extended its AI game-making tool to just two more countries. One is Singapore. The other is Serbia.
The tool is called Build and works as simply as it gets: you describe in your own words the game you want, and the system assembles it for you. Announced in July, it had until now been available only in New Zealand - a classic small test market. Now a Balkan country joins that list, meaning teenagers in Belgrade and Nis will be building games with a sentence instead of code at the same moment as their peers in Singapore.
Why Serbia, the company did not explain. But the choice is not random - platforms pick markets where they have plenty of active young users and English is widespread enough. The question left hanging is why no other country from the region is on that list.
The game no longer has to live on Roblox
The bigger news from the developer conference is that Roblox is letting its games out beyond its own walls. Creators will soon be able to publish their games as standalone apps for phones, computers and consoles, with Roblox remaining only the engine driving them. By the end of the year, a game will also open directly in a web browser via a link.
That is a change of model. Until now the entire point was to keep you inside - on the platform, in their ecosystem, under their rules. Now they are selling the infrastructure and letting the content go wherever it likes. They are also adding AI-driven characters that can test a game themselves, an offline play mode, and an algorithm that offers younger users shorter games and older ones longer.
Five billion for creators, and a card to spend it with
The numbers behind all this are serious. Since 2013, people making games on the platform have earned over five billion dollars, and in the last 12 months alone - 1.7 billion. Founder and chief executive David Baszucki said that in the last quarter players spent over 29 billion hours on the platform, across 180 countries.
Hence the next step: Roblox Wallet, through which creators will be paid in real money by the end of each business day and will be able to transfer it to a bank account. For now it applies only to users in the US over 18. Next year a payment card arrives, letting earnings be spent directly in shops.
What this means for a child from the region
From here the story gets more interesting for us. A boy in Serbia will soon be able to write a sentence, get a game, publish it as a standalone app and earn from it. That is a route to foreign income requiring no degree, no company and no leaving the room - something that sounds far more appealing here than in countries where work is easier to come by.
The other side of the coin is where it always is. The platform holds the tool, the audience, the wallet and the payout rules - and the creator holds none of them. When the terms change one day, nobody will ask. Does it make sense for a whole generation to learn the trade on someone else's property - or is that simply the price of the ticket?
