The Skopje Jazz Festival closes on October 18 with Brazilian electronics and a French accordion. São Paulo Underground are marking their twentieth anniversary, and Vincent Peirani's quintet brings the last chapter of the "Living Being" cycle. Tickets 800 denars, National Opera and Ballet, 20:00.

São Paulo Underground was founded by Rob Mazurek and Mauricio Takara in 2005, and the line-up later grew into a trio with the arrival of Guilherme Granado. Their sound welds Brazilian rhythmic traditions to electronic experimentation and improvisation, and the group has played major festivals across Europe, the Americas and Asia. Twenty years in a formation built by definition on instability is a discipline rarely visible from the outside.

Vincent Peirani is a French accordionist who completely rewrote how his instrument is regarded. He has won the Victoires du Jazz, France's most prestigious jazz award, and he himself describes his Living Being band as a chamber rock orchestra. Playing with him is soprano and tenor saxophonist Emile Parisien, and the ongoing work of that duo is one of the more interesting partnerships in European jazz over the past decade. "Living Being IV: Time Reflections" is the newest chapter, and it is what closes the festival.

The pairing makes sense: two groups working outside the standard jazz line-up, one through electronics, the other through an instrument almost nobody in jazz took seriously before Peirani. Tickets are 800 denars via mktickets.mk, or as part of the festival pass at 3,000 denars for all four nights.
