Stuttgart Online play Zappa Baza in Belgrade on December 4, doors at 9pm. The band the web magazine Popboks named the best debut of 2007 still stands, nearly two decades on, as one of the names that defined what was called the New Serbian Scene.

The band formed in Belgrade in 2006, built around Bojan Slacala on bass and vocals and Marko Barisic on drums - a line-up with no guitarist, a decision that defines the sound itself. Their self-released singles repeatedly landed on the domestic radio charts that matter, which for a band that never went the major-label route means the songs got through the filter without a marketing budget helping them along.

Their biography runs through the festivals that shaped the regional scene in those years: Exit in 2007 and 2009, and the Art and Music Festival in Pula in 2008. Between those dates and today sits a long list of shows across the region, which keeps them in the category of bands that did not disappear the moment they stopped being the new name.

The New Serbian Scene was a label applied at the time to a generation of bands playing harder and more directly than whatever had been passing for domestic rock. Some of those names fell apart, others turned into something else. Stuttgart Online are still the same two people, which after twenty years is the exception rather than the rule.
