Police arrest 35-year-old man from Jelovjane over attempted thefts at three places of worship in Tetovo

On 17 October, the Tetovo Interior Affairs Sector received reports of three attempted aggravated thefts and one theft, committed the previous day at places of worship in the city. At 12:30 on 17 October, police on "Boris Kidrič" Street in Tetovo arrested D.S. (35) from the village of Jelovjane, suspected of aggravated theft and attempted aggravated theft.

According to police, at the "Firdeus" religious building, sometime between 16 and 17 October, an unknown person forced open the basement window and tried to open the basement door, then left. At the Great Mosque on "Gorna Čaršija" Street, at around 5:30 a.m., a person entered the building, looked for the key and then tried to damage and open the door with a metal object. At the "Eski" Mosque on "Probištipska" Street, the person in charge reported that an unknown person had tried to open the metal safe and damaged it. The safe was found moved under a chair.

Mosques, like churches, are open buildings that people walk into without many questions - and that is exactly why they are easy targets. The quick arrest is good news. But police did not say what was actually taken in the one theft that was completed, nor whether the suspect acted alone. Once the case is fully documented, criminal charges will be filed against him.
