In Tetovo, at the municipal pool funded by every citizen, women-only sessions have been introduced, separated from the men. Supporters call it comfort; critics call it the quiet imposition of divisions in a public space. And the question the authorities are dodging is the simplest one of all: is such a decision even legal? Because the moment a public institution starts making exceptions, someone usually ends up left out of the water.
From the Skopje Zoo, white wolves escaped and killed kangaroos and emus. The Anima Mundi association is demanding an urgent inspection and an independent investigation into the failures, and the zoo - stays silent. No statement, no explanation, just a quiet that in situations like this speaks louder than any press release. Because a cage a wolf can slip out of is not safety, but the illusion of it - and families with children come to that zoo.
The same tone carries over to the streets of the capital. In central Skopje, a 33-year-old Chilean man was attacked with a blunt object by two people in the evening, and in Butel, at 2:20 after midnight, the car of a well-known lawyer went up in flames. When arson goes unpunished, it does not stop - it multiplies. And right here comes the strangest news of the day: Minister Toškovski boasted of the lowest crime level in twenty years. The report and the feeling on the street do not always travel together.
Near Pletvar, on a pass that has been listed as critical for years, a truck loaded with sand ran off the road and one person died. The figure "one person" in the statement is somebody's son, father or neighbour. The road is the same, the question about its safety stays the same, and the answer - is still missing.
The same old scores keep spinning in people's heads. Kostovski told Ahmeti that Butel is not for sale, while at the state level VMRO accuses the opposition of stalling the reforms - though if an opposition can stall everything, one has to ask what the majority is for. Accusations fill press releases, they rarely fill fridges. Which is why it sounds different when the asphalt on Fan S. Noli street in Čair is finished - one finished street is sometimes a bigger difference than any speech, if it survives its first winter.
From the economy came a piece of news that flatters and stings at once: Macedonia is the cheapest tourist destination in Europe for Germans, with services on average fifty-two percent cheaper - a hundred euros there is only forty-eight here. But those very prices that look like a gift to a foreigner are a luxury on a local wage. Cheapness is not absolute; it depends on whose paycheck you measure it against.
Abroad, the same distrust of institutions plays out on a bigger stage. The US struck Iran again and a truce just ten days old collapsed at the first drone - so much for deals proclaimed as turning points. In Brussels, in the middle of a heatwave, the European Commission switched off the air conditioning for staff, but not for the commissioners on the upper floors. The institution that lectures on solidarity decided who would sweat - by hierarchy. And in Israel, Netanyahu defends himself in court with an excuse every Balkan reader knows - that he is the victim of political persecution.
To close, something lighter. Milan paid a transfer record for Ramos, Paraguay is demanding a penalty for Bellingham, and an island smaller than Skopje, Cape Verde, knocked out the favourites at the World Cup. A day in which so many institutions stayed silent when they should have answered at least ended, on the pitch, with a story where the rules applied to everyone equally.
