A bus burned on Vodno, and the denial answered a question nobody had asked

The upper deck of a JSP bus caught fire on its way back from Sredno Vodno. The vehicle was empty, the driver reacted in time. A few hours later another bus stalled in central Skopje, opposition SDSM posted a video claiming it had run out of fuel, and JSP replied that those vehicles run on methane - which physically rules out topping them up from a jerrycan. The denial is accurate, and anyone could have checked it in ten minutes. It just happens to answer the party's accusation rather than the burned-out deck. As for why a vehicle from that same fleet went up in flames the same day, there is still no statement and no deadline for findings.

Štip drinks from a filter station taking in eight times the turbidity it can process

One summer storm left a city of more than forty thousand people without drinking water. The number that explains the whole thing is technical: the station is receiving water at 400 NTU turbidity, and its capacity is 50. The director says it would be unwise to promise when the water comes back. That is not an answer to how long it has been known that the station cannot survive a storm.

A third night on Pelister, and two institutions could not agree the same day on whether anyone was hurt

A helicopter dropped 28 tonnes of water, bulldozers are cutting firebreaks, the fire returns with every rise in temperature, and some of the crews on the ground have been without sleep for 48 hours. The hardest part of that story is neither the helicopter nor the tonnage: two institutions issued contradictory statements the same day about whether there were injuries. When the system cannot agree on the simplest fact on the ground, that tells you something about every other number it publishes.

A 42-year-old inmate climbed a utility pole in the yard of Idrizovo prison and grabbed a live wire. Police say they are looking into it. The question left open is not about the climbing - it is why a prison yard has a live wire within arm's reach, and who signed off that this was fine.

19,031 born, 14,500 sitting down in first grade

The gap of 4,500 children is not explained by the falling birth rate alone - the children starting school this year were born when more than 19 thousand were still being born annually. Two other numbers from the same statistics run in opposite directions: over three years, 28 fewer schools and 600 more teachers. The school year begins on a day when the mercury is climbing towards 36, while the average for the period is 26.

Fifteen percent off a ten-denar pencil is not a measure against that gap - it is an announcement of it.

Up to ten thousand dead sheep, and the number is incomplete because farmers are afraid to report

Breeders are afraid of the procedure that follows a report, so the official figure is lower than the real one. The vaccine from Turkey was supposed to arrive within ten days, and in eastern Macedonia it is already late. When reporting your losses costs more than staying quiet, the statistics stop measuring anything at all.

The city train departs on Tuesday, over sleepers from 1959

Part of the line was running on wooden sleepers older than most of its passengers. Now the train will do 80-90 instead of 20-30 an hour, for 40 denars and 25 minutes, with eight departures a day and a four-hour gap in the middle of it. This is good news and it deserves to be said as such. The four-hour gap in the middle of the day is what decides whether the line is transport or a demonstration.

The heavier half of the day all has the same shape. Every one of those statements answered something accurately - a party accusation, a question about fuel, whatever the police will look into. And every one left open the question that actually cost something: why the deck burned, how long the station had been known to fail, who signed off on the wire. A correct answer to the wrong question is not an answer. It is a way of closing the day with nobody carrying it.
