With 77 votes in favor and 8 against, the Assembly backed VMRO-DPMNE's proposal that MPs must hold exclusively Macedonian citizenship. The initiative was submitted by five MPs led by Antonio Milošoski - and the target is five colleagues allegedly holding Bulgarian passports.

SDSM coordinator Oliver Spasovski called the initiative "pure populism" but backed it anyway - and demanded the ban apply to all appointed and elected officials, not just MPs. The Pensioners' Party also wants it expanded to all levels.

Skender Redzepi from the "European Front" opposed it - arguing the measure is unconstitutional. The Liberal-Democratic Party demands uniform standards for all officials immediately.

Dafina Stojanoska from VMRO-DPMNE called the accusations a "soap bubble" that will burst. But the question remains: if most European democracies allow dual citizenship for officials, why are we making an exception? The answer is in Sofia, not Brussels - and everyone knows it.
