A model's daughter who refuses the runway: Anja Louise turned eighteen and is working on music

Anja Louise Ambrosio Mazur turned eighteen on 24 August. She is the daughter of Alessandra Ambrosio, one of the most recognisable models of her generation - and that is exactly why it is interesting that the first choice she made publicly was not to follow that path.

She is not heading for the catwalks. She works on music and acting, with her own band as her main project. She performed at Coachella at the age of eight, at a Devendra Banhart concert, while her father Jamie Mazur played guitar. That is not a child put on stage for a photograph - that is a child who grew up in a musical household and kept it.

A wardrobe that deliberately does not look like her mother's

Her style is defined by what it refuses. No red carpet, no evening splendour. Instead: capri trousers with tight zip-up tops, ballet flats, mini dresses in romantic prints. Black is the base colour, and the aesthetic is what fashion calls Y2K - silhouettes from the start of the century, loosened, effortless.

There are also combinations that deliberately do not go together: a bikini top with pink long bottoms rolled up at the ankle and black sandals. That is the wardrobe of someone dressing for herself, not for the lens.

She showed the formal side at the seventeenth Bravo film festival in Los Angeles, where she came with her mother and with Buck Palmer, who recently got engaged to Alessandra. She wore a black halter-neck dress with clean lines and not one unnecessary detail.

The fashion industry has for decades used the phrase "second generation" as a guarantee of success - a model's daughter is a finished product with an audience already in place. Anja Louise is for now doing something else: using the visibility she inherited to point it at work that has nothing to do with what made her visible. Whether the industry will allow her that choice, or keep calling her to the runway until she gives in, is a question the next few seasons will answer.
