Skopje Mayor Orce Gjorgjievski inspected the construction works on Boris Trajkovski Boulevard and announced that the reconstruction is nearly finished, after five months of work and ahead of the planned deadline. By the end of the year, according to him, Skopje residents will get a fully completed, modern and safe boulevard.
"In record time, ahead of the planned deadline, we are putting an end to decades of traffic misery on one of Skopje's most important arteries. I gave my word that I would not allow my people to live with false promises any longer. Today, the deeds speak," Gjorgjievski said. According to him, more than 100,000 residents will benefit from the boulevard towards Drachevo.
If that happens, people in that part of the city really do have something to celebrate, because three decades is a long time for one boulevard. But the statement doesn't say how much the project costs, who the contractor is, or what the official deadline it has supposedly beaten actually was. "Nearly finished" is a category Skopje knows all too well.
Gjorgjievski made the statement a day after the City had to explain why the 10-million-euro Luna Park contract was cancelled. The boulevard is a chance to show that the slogan "Word given. Promise kept." holds outside social media too. The end of December will show whether it does.
