In early August the Metropolitan Museum announced that the exhibition "John Galliano: Horizons" would cover the designer's entire career - from the early work, through Dior, to what he does today. The exhibition was also to be the theme of the Met Gala on 9 May 2027. The biggest fashion night in the world, with his name above it.
On 31 August, Galliano announced he would not take part.
"After much reflection and conversations with everyone involved, with great sadness I have decided it is best that the exhibition does not take place at this moment," he wrote, after thanking the people at the museum.
The sentence that changed the whole story
What followed is the part rarely read in statements from the fashion industry. Galliano wrote that he continues to take full responsibility for the pain caused by his words in the past, "particularly for the harm I caused to the Jewish and Asian communities".
And then: "Real repair is not achieved through an exhibition, institutional recognition or a single public gesture. It is an ongoing responsibility demonstrated through listening, learning and behaviour over time."
He also mentioned the thing few say out loud - fifteen years of sobriety and recovery, and the people who supported him through it.
What happened in 2011
His career stopped after an incident in a Paris restaurant, where he was detained after making antisemitic statements. Dior dismissed him from the creative director role he had held since 1996. A public apology followed, an admission of alcohol and substance addiction, and rehabilitation. The return came later, through Maison Margiela.
Why this is more interesting than the exhibition itself
The industry that threw Galliano out in 2011 is the same one that offered him its biggest stage in 2027. That is not rehabilitation - it is a calculation. The Met Gala runs on attention, and a contested biography is fuel for attention.
What that calculation did not include was that the man would turn it down himself. And with an argument that exposes the logic: institutional recognition is not repair. If losing the job was the punishment, then handing back the stage is a release - and nobody asked the people who were harmed whether they were satisfied with that.
Fashion has a long tradition of quick forgiveness when the talent pays. This is the rare case of somebody on the inside saying it does not work that way.
