Hair Gets Greasy Faster in Summer - and the Most Common Mistake Is Washing It Too Often

Summer comes with a discomfort few talk about openly: hair gets greasy faster. And here most people make the same mistake - they wash it more often and with harsher shampoos, thinking that will solve the problem. The result is the opposite of what's expected.

The reason is physiological. „In the heat, the sebaceous and sweat glands on the scalp get activated, so the production of oil and sweat increases“, explains trichologist and endocrinologist Vladislav Tkachev. On top of that, the scalp's pH changes in the heat, and microbial activity intensifies and disrupts the skin's balance. The hair reacts exactly as the body knows how - with more oil.

„The most common mistake is washing too often or using very harsh shampoos“, Tkachev says. That damages the scalp's protective lipid layer and - paradoxically - triggers even more oil afterward. In other words, the harder you hit your hair, the harder it hits back.

What actually helps: gentle sulfate-free formulas that draw out excess oil without stripping the skin, deep hydration with masks and conditioners, and ingredients that balance the scalp - niacinamide, zinc, salicylic acid. Plus sun protection with a hat and less blow-drying and straightening. Advice the industry is reluctant to say out loud, because it sells exactly the opposite: sometimes you help your hair most by leaving it alone.
