SDS spokesperson Bogdanka Kuzeska used May 24 - Cyril and Methodius Day - for political intervention. The main message: "The Macedonian language is recognized and protected," and "true patriotism" is securing the country's future through EU integration.
As key evidence of recognition, Kuzeska pointed to the Frontex agreement, signed in Macedonian without footnotes - which she interpreted as formal recognition of the language by the EU. That's a reality most people already know, but political messaging needs repetition.
More broadly, the spokesperson hit out at political opponents who "until recently called our leaders traitors," and today implicitly acknowledge that the Prespa Agreement protected Macedonian identity. She underlined that "EU integration is the strongest guarantee" for the country's future development.
The argument over who inflicted the biggest losses on Macedonian identity - Prespa, the Bulgaria treaty, or the opponents who now appeal to patriotism - is old. Yet something is shifting: even the opposition is loudly reaccepting that EU negotiations are the only realistic path for the country. That's acceptance of the road, not acceptance of the terms.
METLA notes: government and opposition now agree that Macedonia belongs in the EU. The disagreement is in the sequencing - who signs, who negotiates, who refuses. That's an operational difference, not a substantive one. And precisely because of that, in domestic political theater - everyone is a "patriot," everyone is "pro-EU," and everyone is convinced the other side is a traitor. Citizens, meanwhile, watch the same process getting ten years old - with the same outcome.
