Five evenings and 20 stalls in "Avionče" park: the AERO festival runs free entry until 8 September

From 4 to 8 September, the "Avionče" park in Aerodrom is hosting the second edition of the AERO Street Food Festival - five evenings, 20 catering stalls, five bands and ten DJs. Entry is free and the festival runs daily from 17:30 to 00:30.

The name is no accident. AERO brings together four cuisines: A for American, E for European, R for regional and O for oriental. The stalls offer sushi, tacos, burgers, gyros, pizza, focaccia, traditional kebabs, pancakes, rice pudding and trdelník.

On stage: South Park, Ringtones, Dopamine, Marbel and Acoustic Division, while the DJs include Milan Serafimov, Aleksandar Jordanov, "Janko petel javaše", Fluere and Sure Shotz. The closing night on 8 September brings tributes to Vlado Janevski and the band DNK.

Besides the music, every evening features speed-eating contests, quizzes and audience challenges hosted by Bombakis.

The festival is sponsored by the Municipality of Aerodrom and held under the patronage of the City of Skopje, with Lions in Move and Cafe Mambo behind the organisation.

It is worth noting what is actually happening here: a municipality and a city are paying for an event in a public park, and free entry means the park stays open to anyone walking past. That is a different logic from the fenced, ticketed festival - and one of the rare cases where public space is genuinely used as public space.

The question left is whether "Avionče" will survive the fifth day. Thousands of visitors on one patch of grass five nights running is a load nobody usually calculates in advance, and the bill for it lands on the municipality next spring.
