Some alibis sound so absurd they almost deserve attention - this may be one of them. A Briton suspected of murder in Colombia claims that at the moment of the crime he was watching football in an Irish pub.

The body of 36-year-old Natalia Villalba was found in a suitcase in Bogota. According to the investigation, she was killed on 18 June in an apartment in the Chico district, beaten to death, and then placed in the suitcase to conceal the crime. The suspect is 46-year-old Briton Matthew Ashley Foster-Smith, arrested at the international airport in Quito, Ecuador, after Interpol issued a red notice and with the help of the British police.

His alibi is exactly what makes the story unbelievable: „I was watching the England vs Croatia match on a big screen in an Irish pub," he claimed. The match did indeed take place - on 17 June in Dallas, at the World Cup. The day before his arrest, the suspect reportedly contacted a British tabloid repeating the same story, and it was precisely through those phone calls that the authorities located him.

Behind the bizarre football detail lies a darker background - Foster-Smith had previously been convicted of stalking in 2023 and was under court restraining measures. The case is a reminder that violence rarely comes out of nowhere; it usually leaves a trail long before the final, gravest act. The question that always recurs in stories like this is the same: when the system knew someone was dangerous, why didn't it do more before it was too late?
