Greenland has around 56,000 inhabitants and more ice than roads. And that island is now where Washington, Copenhagen and Nuuk are reaching a deal on the military - with a signature that, according to sources, is due on Tuesday, while world leaders are gathered at the UN General Assembly. The timing is not accidental. Things like this do not get signed when nobody is looking, but precisely when everybody is.

This concerns two old Cold War bases in the south of the island. One is at Narsarsuaq, a settlement of a few dozen residents, where the American base Bluie West One was shut down in the 1950s. The other is at Mestersvig, used today by the Sirius Patrol - a Danish special unit that travels by dog sled. If that sounds like a detail from another century, it is because it genuinely is. Now an American military presence is arriving in that landscape, with more planned for the east coast.

The agreement nobody has seen

The text of the deal has not been published. Three sources familiar with the arrangement say the details are not final until the document is signed. So: we know something is being signed, we know roughly where, but we do not know what it actually says. How many times have we seen this scene in the Balkans - the announcement first, the content later, if ever?

Denmark has its own line of defence in all this, and it is carefully constructed: the deal, Copenhagen argues, places Arctic security under the NATO umbrella rather than leaving it a matter for Washington and Denmark alone. Translated from diplomatic into plain language - if we cannot stop it, let there at least be more signatures in the room. That is the tactic of the smaller party, and the smaller party here is an EU and NATO member state.

Months of pressure

The arrangement follows months of pressure from president Donald Trump, who has repeatedly and openly talked about American control over Greenland and has ruled out neither military nor economic force. When the world's strongest military says it is "not ruling out" options regarding an ally's territory, that is not a negotiating position - it is a reminder of who is holding the table.

The numbers from the past give you the scale. During the Cold War the US had 17 military facilities in Greenland and more than 10,000 personnel. Today only the Pituffik space base remains, with around 150 American soldiers. Which means this is not construction from scratch - it is a return to a space once abandoned because it was judged no longer necessary. When someone goes back to a place they once left, it is worth asking what changed in the calculation.

And for us down here in the south, the story has a familiar shape. A small territory, large interests, and an agreement whose contents journalists will learn first and citizens second. The Balkans knows that sequence by heart. The difference is that Greenland has ice, while here we only had assurances that all of it was "in our interest".
