He went out on his bike and did not come back: Víctor Coyote, the man who refused to be only one thing, has died

He went out on his bike. They found him lifeless on a road in Segovia. Víctor Coyote was 68 and, according to everyone who knew him, had no intention of stopping.

Born in Galicia in 1958, he was one of those names Spain's „movida” produced in the early eighties - a generation that walked out of a dictatorship and immediately started playing louder than anyone expected. He founded the band Los Coyotes, which formally broke up in 1991, but he never withdrew from the scene. He painted, designed, made comics, worked on audiovisual projects. The music for the children's television programme Xabarín Club - that was his.

„I think the variety of things I do gave me breadth of vision”, he said about his approach. A sentence that sounds modest and is actually a description of an entire career: a man who refused to be only one thing in an industry that pays best when you are predictable.

The label El Volcán announced his death with a text that makes no attempt at solemnity: „Today life is far less fun and far uglier. Today life dealt us one of those blows that leave you in shock.” And then the sentence that says everything: „Víctor was alive, and he was always more alive than everyone else. He never stopped exploring, creating, making his projects real.”

Earlier this year he released El propio, a retrospective of his solo career. He had concerts booked for September in Zaragoza and Huesca. So this is not a man who was slowly withdrawing and whom death found at the end of something. It found him in the middle.

The cause of death has not yet been officially confirmed.

The Balkans know that generation by heart - people who played in basements while the system was falling apart, and then went on doing something else as well because music does not pay the rent. Coyote is a reminder that those biographies are not failures, they are wide. A man who spent forty years making something new, and in the end went out on his bike.
