She Woke From a Coma After a Shark Attack: The First Thing She Asked Was About Her Daughter

Thirty-four-year-old teacher Leah Stewart woke from an induced coma almost a week after a shark attacked her while she was swimming near Coogee Beach in Sydney. She recognized her mother, said „I love you“ and asked about her daughter. For the family, it's a miracle.

The attack happened on Saturday, 13 June, close to shore. Stewart suffered multiple lacerations to her arms and legs, major blood loss and the amputation of one arm. She was in critical condition, in intensive care, with several operations behind her and more scheduled. „For us this is a miracle and the answer to everything we prayed for this past week“, her brother Joshua said.

Australia has already recorded several shark attacks in 2026, including fatalities in Queensland and Western Australia. Every summer the same story repeats: a person enters water that isn't their territory, then is surprised when the sea strikes back.

Stewart's condition remains critical and, as her brother says, „there's a long road ahead of her“. But waking up is the first step. A story that reminds us how strong the human will is - and how little we actually control when we step into a place where nature has the last word.
