Thin hair has one eternal enemy: volume, or more precisely its lack. And summer makes the situation worse - the heat, the humidity, the water from the sea and the pool flatten the hair even more. The solution, hairdressers say, isn't in another spray that promises miracles, but in a cut that works with thin hair instead of against it.
Layers in the right place, not everywhere
The key is carefully placed layers. When they're properly distributed, they create a feeling of density and movement from the very root. Internal layers in longer hair give lightness without sacrificing length, while layers concentrated around the face frame it and add dynamism. By contrast, a flat cut with no layers, where all the ends are at the same height, creates the illusion of thicker hair precisely because nothing is thinned out.
A bob and lob that work for you
Short and medium cuts are a strong ally of thin hair. The asymmetric lob, where the front is shorter than the back, creates a stepped effect and more body. The heart-shaped bob, with soft layers that curl inward, keeps density at the ends. There's also the textured pixie, which with small layers emphasizes the natural texture and gives volume effortlessly.
The fringe as a density trick
The fringe is an underrated tool. A side fringe that falls softly adds movement from the root and breaks up the flatness, while a straight, full fringe creates the illusion of density in front and frames the gaze. A small change, and the whole head of hair looks fuller. For the braver, the short version of the eighties „mullet” combines a fringe, shorter sides and a slightly longer back, which gives thin hair texture and character.
The common denominator of all these cuts is simple: less weight where the hair is weakest, more movement where it's needed. It's the opposite of what the industry usually sells you - that the problem is solved with a product, not with a good cut.
