More than 1,200 residents of Gostivar fell ill from water that had Vardar river water pumped straight into the city supply. At the same time, the institutions insisted that swimming in Lake Ohrid was safe, even as sewage runs into it and the filters have been dead for years. And Bitola went under water again - the same street, for the second time in three weeks. Different towns, the same pattern: the official sentence that everything is fine arrives faster than the lab results.
When Russia shut off the tap on diesel exports, fuel prices around the world jumped within hours. Here, diesel went up by 5.50 denars in the very days Serbia was cutting its excise duties. Same oil, same region, two opposite decisions. The war we watch on a screen, far from us, still finds a way to pull up at the nearest petrol station.
State statistics showed that half of all employees live on up to 36,000 denars a month. In the same week came the youth-employment grant - but split across everyone, it works out to around 3,900 euros per job. The numbers in the press releases sit neatly in a row. The problem is that not one of them lines up with the bills people pay at the end of the month.
In Kyiv everyone signed a joint declaration on Ukraine - everyone except Serbia, which took the other side of the table. A few days later, Serbia and America signed a strategic deal on power, weapons and 5G, while we are still waiting at the counter. The region's position, as so many times before, is drawn in a room we are not in.
In a matter of days we saw a customs officer dragged by a car at Blace and a kilo of marijuana - fast action, photos, an arrest. That is the part that always reaches us. In the same week, an audit found that "Parking of Centar Municipality" has 86 million denars in uncollected fees and unbalanced books. Smaller case, louder reaction; bigger sum, quieter silence.
Different addresses, different jurisdictions, different press releases. But the logic underneath keeps repeating: the institution speaks one language, and people's lives run in another. That is the claim this week made - and the one worth checking again next week.
