Some weddings are remembered for their extravagance. This one is remembered for the opposite - for how little it took the bride to look flawless. On 19 July 1990, in the Provençal town of Tarascon, the French model Inès de la Fressange married the Italian businessman and art dealer Luigi d'Urso.

Instead of a big gown with a floor-length veil, Fressange, then 33 and already a former Chanel ambassador, appeared in a white mini dress with a belt and a cream jacket with padded shoulders, signed Yves Saint Laurent. She completed the look with a stiff-brimmed hat and a short tulle veil, short white gloves, button earrings and a gold bracelet. The bouquet was made of classic cream roses and green ears of wheat, tied with a large white satin ribbon.

Among the guests was Princess Caroline of Monaco, accompanied by her then-young son Andrea Casiraghi. Caroline, a friend of the bride since the eighties through Parisian aristocratic circles, arrived in a dress with a sand-coloured jacket, gloves, floral-print shoes and a straw hat with dark pearl necklaces.

The story afterward did not stay easy. The couple had two daughters - Nine Marie and Violette Marie. Luigi d'Urso died of a heart attack in 2006, at nearly 55. In 2023, Violette published a bestselling book in which she spoke openly about her father's death.

Thirty-five years later, this wedding is still remembered - not because it was expensive, but because of one lesson fashion keeps forgetting: elegance is not quantity, it's certainty. Inès de la Fressange knew that even then, in a mini dress with ears of wheat in her hand.
