Tetovo Pool Introduces Women-Only Hours: Reasonable Accommodation or a Precedent?

The municipal pool in Tetovo has introduced hours reserved only for women and girls - twice a week, on Wednesdays and Saturdays, from 8:30 to 12:00, when men are barred from swimming. The decision immediately opened a debate of the kind that rarely passes quietly here.

According to the explanation, the move came after some women and girls said they did not want to mix with men in the pool. Supporters see it as a matter of comfort and access - more women who otherwise wouldn't come will now be able to swim more freely. Critics, however, read it as a step toward a gender division of public space.

Both views have their logic, and that's exactly why the topic is sensitive. A public pool is funded by all citizens, so the question of who, when and under what conditions has access to it is not trivial. Is this a reasonable accommodation of the real needs of part of the community, or a precedent that could spread to other public spaces tomorrow?

The answer depends on how it's handled going forward - whether it stays a voluntary service for those who want it, or grows into a rule that changes what „public" space means. For now, Tetovo has opened a discussion many would rather avoid. And avoided discussions rarely disappear on their own.
