The Italian trio Zu play Zagreb's Vintage Industrial Bar on 13 October. Doors open at 20:00, the concert starts at 21:15, and entry is 15 euros in presale or 18 on the door.
Zu are an instrumental outfit from Rome, formed in 1997, who started out writing and performing music for theatre productions. The line-up is Luca Mai on baritone saxophone, Massimo Pupillo on bass and Paolo Mongardi on drums, who took the drum stool in 2011.
Baritone sax, bass guitar and drums is a textbook jazz set-up, but their sound owes far more to punk, and AllMusic simply writes that they refuse categorisation. In practice that means a band erasing the lines between metal, noise, jazz, ambient, prog and experimental music, which is exactly how they earned cult status.
John Zorn, one of the most relevant voices on the American experimental scene, said they had created powerful, distinctive music that comprehensively outstrips most bands working today. Across more than twenty-five years they have released over fifteen albums and worked with Mike Patton on the album "Carboniferous", with director Romeo Castellucci and with Eugene Robinson of Oxbow. Tickets are on entrio.hr, which in denars comes to roughly 924 to 1,109.
