Deputy health minister Jovica Andovski, Kičevo mayor Aleksandar Jovanoski and general hospital director Maja Cvetanovska Trajkovska, together with a World Bank delegation, visited the hospital in Kičevo and reviewed the concept for building a new facility. The planned investment is around 1.38 billion denars, or 22.5 million euros.

„Kičevo has faced inadequate hospital conditions for decades. It is time this problem got a lasting and functional solution,” Andovski said. The aim, he says, is for residents to get reliable healthcare in their own town, and for medical staff to get modern working conditions.

The key phrase is „for decades”

The most honest sentence in the entire announcement came from the deputy minister himself. This is not a new need that appeared last year. This is a problem that has lasted so long it entered official rhetoric as something normal, like a weather forecast.

Under the concept, the new complex will have modern facilities for diagnostics, inpatient treatment and emergency care, medical gas systems and energy-efficient solutions. The hospital will serve not just Kičevo but the population of surrounding areas, which should reduce the need for patients to travel to Skopje, Ohrid and Bitola.

That journey is the heart of the story. When a hospital lacks the capacity for anything more serious, the patient sets off for Skopje - and distance becomes a medical factor. In an emergency, that isn't an inconvenience. It's a risk.

From concept to hospital

Here it pays to be precise about what actually happened yesterday. No contract was signed. No tender was launched. No foundation stone was laid. A concept was reviewed, in the presence of a World Bank delegation - which suggests the financing is still taking shape.

The health ministry says the new hospital should end years of uncertainty. That is true - if it gets built. The list of announced hospital projects in Macedonia is longer than the list of finished ones.

22.5 million euros for a town that has waited decades is a serious number and good news. Whether it also becomes a hospital will be known after the first hole in the ground, not after the first presentation.
