Two symbols, the same parliament, thirty-four years apart

On 11 August 1992, parliament voted in an anthem and a flag. One symbol is still with us; the other lasted three years and brought an economic blockade. The story of those two votes is more interesting than the anniversary itself: 36 entries were submitted for the anthem, the commission shortlisted three finalists, and the song was not new at all - it was written in Struga in 1941 and performed that same evening on a guitar. The flag bearing the Star of Kutlesh was changed under pressure, after the Interim Accord of 1995.

That same law, with the sun's rays prescribed down to the millimetre, is still in force today. Which brings us to the second half of this particular day.

At the independence celebration stood a flag that is not the state flag

The government explained it as an "art installation". SDSM demanded four things: which company produced the flag, who was responsible for the visual performance, what the celebration cost, and who takes responsibility. Here the opposition is right, regardless of which party happens to be asking - the public procurement exists, the contractor has a name, the invoice has a figure. Three published facts close the topic in a day. If they are not published, the question becomes more interesting than the flag itself.

The law, incidentally, provides for liability even when a flag is displayed wrongly "by mistake or through ignorance". So "we didn't mean to" is not a defence - it is precisely the case that article covers.

A police officer on chemotherapy, sent home over a single line item

The heaviest news of the day involves neither a flag nor a celebration. The entire interior ministry lost its health insurance overnight, and people were turned away from chemotherapy and diagnostic procedures with a simple explanation: pay privately or wait. The cause was one unrecorded contribution for an officer reinstated by court order. The software linking the ministry and the health fund works on an all-or-nothing principle, so a block on one man knocks out thousands.

This also happened at the end of June. The problem is identified, the mechanism is understood, the solution does not exist. The system unblocks itself within a day - and that is exactly why nobody will be held to account. But for an oncology patient, one day is not an administrative triviality.

One scanner for the whole country, and it is broken

In that same health system, the only PET/CT machine in the country has been out of service for months. Patients pay around 1,300 euros to be scanned privately or abroad. The hardest admission is not the breakdown but what came from the Institute itself: in recent years the maintenance protocol for the diffusion pump was not followed. The machine did not break down suddenly - it was left to break.

The State Audit Office warned as far back as 8 May 2025 that the entire public health system depends on a single scanner and a single cyclotron, and recommended buying a second machine. Between 2021 and 2023, 6,457 referrals were processed, roughly 180 scans a month. That is 180 people a month whose treatment depends on one machine, in a country that knew this was the case.

23 fires in a single day, and three of them have a manager

The crisis management centre counted 23 open fires in 24 hours. The most serious burns near Dragov Dol, in Makedonski Brod. Among the rest are landfills in Kriva Palanka and Delchevo, and rubbish in Sredorek near Kumanovo. The difference between a forest fire and a landfill fire is that the second has an exact address and someone who signed for it. The conditions are objective - high temperatures, dried-out vegetation. But the climate does not set fire to a landfill, nor light stubble beside a motorway.

The Judicial Council against the Constitutional Court, and a journalist waiting since 2022

The Judicial Council and the judges came out against the Constitutional Court's ruling, arguing it is not final. While the institutions argue over whose decision counts, the journalist's case has been waiting since 2022. That is the third instance today in which a law exists, a procedure exists, and someone is waiting.

Buses in December, asphalt after three decades

Skopje announced the first 30 electric buses for December, with the remaining 120 due within a year and a half. At the other end of the city, 850 metres of Boris Trajkovski Boulevard are finally being asphalted after three decades of waiting - and the real obstacle was neither money nor machinery, but unfinished expropriation. In Bitola, meanwhile, a million-euro pitch spent three days under boards for two concerts, and the utility company says there is no cause for concern.

The central bank gains permanent access to 50 billion euros

The least celebrated news of the day is probably the most economically significant: the ECB has granted the National Bank permanent access through the EUREP instrument, replacing the temporary pandemic-era line. This is a form of convergence that nobody marks with flags. The same day, the government adopted a priority list of 41 projects worth over 5 million euros each, which also contains a sentence noting that making the list does not oblige anyone to fund them. The real test arrives with the 2027 budget.

Beyond the borders

A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck Colombia, killing 111 people. In Ukraine, Russia is cutting the bridges towards the Danube, while Nikolaevka is being defended as the gateway to Sloviansk. On the Bar Riviera, 28 hours without electricity at the peak of the season sent tourists packing - a neighbour's story that could be ours any summer.

And something lighter to close

Macedonia's junior handball squad finished ninth in Belgrade and secured a ticket to the World Championship, after outplaying Sweden and Serbia. A generation that made its own place, without a single meeting, tender or press release.

If this day has one thing in common in its heavier half, it is that a document existed everywhere: a law on the flag, a maintenance protocol, an audit report, a court ruling. None of it was missing. What was missing was someone to read it before it became news.
