Netflix Reverses Course: Greta Gerwig's Narnia Hits Theatres First, Streaming in April 2027

Netflix has pushed back Greta Gerwig's new film - an adaptation of "The Chronicles of Narnia" starring Daniel Craig and Meryl Streep - from November 2026 to February 12, 2027. The reason: the company wants a full theatrical window instead of a streaming debut with a limited release. The theatrical window closes on April 2, 2027 - that's when it lands on the platform.

This is a sharp turn for Netflix. Just a few years ago, the company was the symbol of the end of the cinema experience: exclusive premieres straight to the home screen, no theatres. Now the same company is actively building relationships with cinema chains, including AMC - which recently said its partnership with Netflix is producing strong results. The market won.

On the film itself, Gerwig says she is fascinated by the source concept: "A cosmic lion who sings the world of Narnia into existence - bizarre and brilliant." The director behind "Barbie" and "Little Women", with Craig and Streep in front of the camera - this is a product with obvious global ambition.

The lesson: streaming platforms have figured out that the cinema experience is not dead - it is a marketing tool. When Netflix puts something out in theatres only, it creates interest and conversation that pure streaming cannot reproduce. "Narnia" is an attempt to repeat that formula. Will it work? February 2027 will tell.
