Rosario Flores is 62, became a grandmother for the first time in June, and is currently on a tour marking more than three decades of a career. The question she gets asked most often is how she looks like that. The answer she has been giving for years is boring, which usually means it is true.
„I've always been very sporty. I still am, because I have a lot of energy and I have to channel it somehow,” she said. Not a single powdered supplement is mentioned, not one treatment, not one branded programme. She works out at home and she dances. That's it.
The second half of the answer is more interesting: on tour, during demanding choreography, she loses up to two kilos per show. That is not training in the sense the industry sells it - that is work. Someone who has spent decades on stage moving for two hours doesn't go to the gym to „look good”, but because without it they can't finish the shift.
Here is the distinction that is rarely said out loud. The health and beauty industry sells a state - an appearance you achieve and then maintain with products. What Flores describes is function: she needs her body to work, so she maintains it. The look is a side effect, not the goal.
She has been married for twenty years to Pedro Manuel Lazaga, whom she met on the set of Pedro Almodóvar's 2002 film. They married in 2006 in Zahora, in Cádiz. That isn't incidental to the story either - continuity, in people and in habits, is rarely photogenic, but it is usually what makes the difference after thirty years.
„I'm not the same as when I was younger, but I feel very young, with a lot of strength and desire to do things,” she says. Accepting that something has changed, without pretending it hasn't - that is a sentence that sounds different from anything you'll read on a jar of cream.
Do we really need one more product, or just something that makes us move every day? We all know the answer. The problem is that the second one doesn't come in a bottle.
